Hi,

I am looking to buy the tilt, but I do NOTwant to buy a data plan. Will I still have a lot of options using the phone without buying a data plan or using ATT's wareless internet? If I buy/download a third party's navigation software... will that not access the ATT data network... or will it need to access it and will I be charged on a per kilobyte basis. ATT said that I will need a data plan so I am not charged for the GPS accessing the ATT internet (they claim that the GPS software must access their data/internet for it to work), but I have read many reviews taht said that the third party softwares on the tilt work independently from the ATT data/internet. If I have the ATT data/internet blocked, will I be able to use any third party navigation software? Also, will any third party software work on the phone? I want to use some of the phones features/capabilities, but I do NOT want to pay for ANY data usage (no per kilobyte/no data plan). Thanks!

-Aside from navigation, without the data plan (with the ATT internet/data blocked)... is there still a lot to do with this phone?

When dealing with GPS applications specifically, it will all depend on what you are using. If you are using something like Microsoft's Live Mobile, Google Maps Mobile, or Yahoo Go, then yes you will need an unlimited data plan with AT&T. These applications do not have maps stored on your phone. Instead, they rely on Internet access to be able to download the map in conjunction to your GPS position. Other applications, such as TomTom, store their maps on a MicroSD memory card, thus eliminating the need to download real time maps.

While there are many different things that you can do with your Tilt without having a data connection, it is highly advisable to get one. Without it, you are not taking full advantage of the capabilities of the device, and might be better suited purchasing a cheaper unit.

Media Net should work, although ATT (and the other carriers as well) are policing users to make sure they have the "right" plan. There isn't much difference between that and the PDA plan other than cost.

You can use the tilt without a data plan because it has wifi. I just have the simple text plan and I use my wifi at work

Thanks guys, well does anyone know anybody that has been charged with fees for not having the plan? I'm not going to tell ATT in other words if I don't have to.
I understand about that wifi, Cheryl, but i'm constantly on the road with work so wifi isn't always available when I need to use google maps to find my location.
And as for texts, I need the unlimited just to stay in contact short wave style and for reference.
But I don't see a reason to shell out more money for something I already have.

I don't have a Tilt (yet), but I have the 8125, a predecessor. You should be able to turn on your wifi using the Comm Manager. Mine has a button for this, but I think you have an icon at the top of your screen. The Comm Manager lets you turn on wifi, bluetooth, flight mode, etc...

After you turn on wifi, your phone will automatically search for a hotspot, and inform you when it finds one; then you can tell it to connect to the network it's spotted. After you ok a particular hotspot, it should connect on its own. After that, just pull up Internet Explorer to surf. I'd suggest turning wifi off if you're not actively using it, to conserve your battery.

I hope this helps, but keep in mind I don't have this phone; I'm just extrapolating from experience. :)

I don't have a data plan either. I use the Tilt more as a phone and sync with Outlook. I use WiFi at home or at work to access Internet. I use TomTom and the built-in GPS radio to access the free GPS satellite info.

If I did texting and a lot of other things the Tilt can do, I suppose I'd need a data plan. But, so far I haven't had the need.

Great device.
