Smart phone bought by a dumb person

I just got my new AT&T Tilt and man am I lost. I've always had a "dumb" phone. All this new technology is confusing! Something I am having a problem with right now is that when I don't use my phone for a few minutes or after a phone call my screen goes dim and i can't use any of my top touch "buttons" ex windows connectivity volume. The only way I can get it back is to press my power button twice and unlock my phone. I have looked thru my book and been on AT&T website I can not figure out how to turn this feature off. Also it does not say it is locked before I have to hit the power button:confused:

press the power button when your phone goes dim. it goes into sleep mode.

So there is no way I can take this setting off? Sleep mode even after I make a phone call?

try this: start>settings>"system" tab on bottom>backlight>"external power" on bottom>change to minutes wanted
