I wanted to start this thread to discuss all the facets of the unlocked version of the Tilt (HTC Kaiser). Where to get it? How much? Who benefits from unlocking? Etc.

I actually don't know that much about unlocked phones(I know having T-mobile and thus GSM unlocked is the way to go) and was wondering if I could buy a unlocked phone directly from ATT? I know there are several sites preselling the Tilt for around 800 dollars (Google Negri Electronics) but was wondering if it could be cheaper through ATT?

I don't know where you are writing from but T-mobile America does not have GSM just EDGE. If you buy the phone from a carrier like T-mobile it will come locked and with a - probably - two year contract.

If you want an unlocked one you will probably have to go to a third party vendor. That's the way I'm doing it just to get away from the long contracts.

Cheers.

GSM is the radio standard that companies like T-mobile use. EDGE is their network service (which im not interested in). I believe your comparing two different things.

I stand corrected.

From ATT you will receive a locked phone which means: 1. cheaper (probably around $500), 2. May have some special ATT software and some HTC software may be deleted/eliminated (not critical) and 3. can be used only on the ATT network. This phone can be unlocked whether by ATT (depends on their spcific policy for the phone, how long you are a customer, etc.) or by buying an "unlock" (none available yet but they will be available as soon as ATT starts deliveries) for something between $25 to $50. So basically, if you want to save $$$ go for ATT and have it unlocked later.
Once the phone is unlocked you can insert any SIM card into it. If it is a new account - why not stick with ATT?

Hello. I read, in one of a handful of reviews, that locking to a GSM signal was frustrating, but there was a tweak that made it solid when looking to ?switch cells?. Anyone have an opinion on that?

I'm looking to put my T-Mobile sim card in this baby, but want to make sure I have good signal and good audio.

Hi, I live in a third-world contry (with US-compatible 3.5G nevertheless) and will be travelling to NYC in mid october. I would like to but an HTC TyTN II and bring it back home. This will mean of course either buying it unlocked or unlocking it afterwards.

My questions are quite straightforward:

If I buy the non-contract version from an AT&T store, is this a completely unlocked phone that can be used with any SIM and GSM carrier, or is it just available for AT&T prepaid service?

If not -or if for any other reason it's a better idea- can anybody recommend an over-the counter store in NYC where I can get an unloocked OEM? It would be specially nice to have the option of the front camera.

It seems it does not have a standard 3.5mm headphone plug, but uses a mini-USB RAZR-style connection. Does it include an adapter? If not, any suggestion for getting one? Will the ones for the RAZR v3i be compatible?

I use Mac OS X, but I refuse to get an iPhone with the current state of Apple/AT&T imposed restrictions. So any Mac-centric tips regarding connectivity and activeSync workarounds would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank You very much for your help and sorry if some of my questions are very newbie-ish.

I don't believe the original questions were completely answered. I too have the same questions. I believe I know some of the answers so I will begin adding some of what I have discovered.

1) What to buy? ATT Tilt with Contract or Unlocked Kaiser? ATT Tilt is much cheaper. Almost a third of the price of an unlocked phone. However it requires a two year contract. The unlocked phone will give you full HTC functionality and will not have all of the ATT bloatware on it. The unlocked phone also comes with the front video which the FCC in the states regulates.

2) What do you gain or lose from unlocking the Tilt?

3) Does unlocking a TILT cause any problems when using it on an ATT network?

4) How do you unlock the Tilt? I have tried to find straight forward instructions without any luck. I have found piece mealed ways of doing it but nothing that is easy to work off of.

5) Assuming you are able to unlock the phone, is there a way to roll it back to it’s original state just as you received it from ATT?

Has anyone tried to unlock the phone yet? I found this website. http://www.gsmliberty.net/shop/att-tilt-instant-remote-unlock-p-1521.html

and was wondering if anyone had unlocked either by code or using this software?

Guys,
Tilt works just fine even after unlocking with AT&T network. You don't have to use any 3rd party software to get the unlock code..just clal AT&T and request them for an unlock code..(just thell that you are travelling to an other country and u need the unlock code..) from my experience u must get the code in about 3 mins or so..if they don't have it..they will get it to you from HTC and that may take a mx of about a week.

Unlocking the phone means just ability to use the phone with any SIM card (not just AT&T's SIM)...it doesn't change any functionality of the phone...and works fine with AT&T carrier even after unlocking..i have unlocked my phone and am still using AT&T as my carrier.

Hope this helps.

Are there any negative side effects to unlocking this way? Are there compatibility issues to be concerned about? Have you tried it?

Thanks for the tip!

I have had an unlocked tilt for about 6 months now and using iton t-mobile .
i bought the phone thru at&t and asked them to unlock it. All they asked was if i was taking it overseas which i told then no, and within 2 days the unlock code was emailed to me. It works fine. BEST PHONE I HAVE OWNED.

If you are on ATT simply call ATT and tell them you will be traveling and want to use a local sim when you get there.
I had my tilt 2 weeks with a 2 year agreement and they gave me the unlock code.
May take a couple calls to get someone who will give it to you.
To unlock simply insert a sim other that ATT and it will ask for the unlock code. Put the code in and there you go.

I live in the United States and traveled to Fiji last summer and I called ATT a week before we left for vacation and told them I would be traveling out of the country and didn't want to purchase a phone in the country that I will be traveling to and would like to use my phone with a local sim the ATT gave me an unlock code without any hassle.
